Types of Filtration Systems for Wastewater Applications
The liquid filtration process is an important step in various applications where water is reused within the system. This article details the types of filtration systems available and the benefits of each.
Liquid filtration is the process of removing particles and other media of a certain size or larger from liquids. Removing these particles and debris from a wastewater system allows water to be reused within the system. This type of filtering process is important for many different reasons. Reusing filtered water allows companies to reduce overall waste, reduce water usage, and potentially reduce chemical consumption.
For industries such as the power industry, large amounts of dissolved solids are often found in discharge water. In other systems, such as in the paper industry, pulp left in the wastewater can account for up to 1,000 ppm.
Filters used for wastewater filtration vary from system to system. This is necessary for a number of reasons. First, the condition of the water entering the system can affect the type of filtration system required. Second, the required purity of the water reused after filtration has an impact on the type of filter required. There are two main types of filtration in wastewater treatment systems: particle filtration and membrane filtration.
Particle filtration
Particle filtration is a system that uses physical or mechanical means to separate solids from liquids. When it comes to wastewater treatment, particle filtration is often the first step in treating contaminated wastewater. This is because particle filtration is designed to remove solids larger than one micron.
There are many different filters available for particle filtration. Several options are available, as some aspects of the wastewater to be treated can vary widely, depending on the system that uses the water. The properties that most commonly influence filter selection include particle density, particle size, shape, quantity, and texture. Any other substances present in the water will also affect the type of filter required for the system.
bag filter. Bag filters are an excellent choice for small applications and systems where waste reduction is important. As the name suggests, bag filters are elongated bags. Wastewater enters the bag and solid particles in the water are trapped, allowing only clean water to flow through the holes of the bag to the other side.
Depending on the needs of the system, bags with pores of different sizes can be used to capture particles of different sizes. The housing of this filter can vary to accommodate only one bag or multiple bags at the same time. Multi-bag filtration allows higher flow rates within the system.
Bag filters are an ideal choice for those looking for cost-effective filtration, such as in industries where the costs that accompany self-cleaning filtration systems are inappropriate. This design also accumulates less total waste than other filtration systems. While bag filters are a great option for many, they don't have the same versatility as other filters.
Cartridge filter

Utilizing pleated fabric or other types of screens, a cartridge filter is a modular filter designed to capture particles and even chemicals through the filtration process. Cartridge filters are generally divided into two categories: surface filters and depth filters. Surface filters retain particles on the surface of the liquid, while depth cartridge filters use thicker media designed to create a twisted path that retains particles. Cartridge filters are considered very versatile and are used in a variety of applications.
